Community Inclusion is something many of us take for granted. It is being involved and being a valued member of the community in which we live. Being involved in our community means using services such as shops, doctors, hairdressers and working, volunteering and utilising the services of education; to enjoy what the community has to offer. Many of us get to know others and make friends in our communities by pursuing an interest. Our interests encourage us to join groups and clubs, where we meet people with similar interests and this forms an important role in the social aspect of our lives. There are many ways to be a part of and valued in the community in which we live.
What does it mean for people with disabilities?
Community Inclusion is important for people with disabilities in the same way it is for the rest of the community. Sometimes though, it is a little more difficult. Historically many people with disabilities have lived, or have been involved, in institutional settings, limiting access to community activities. Now, many people with disabilities are living on their own with support, or in small groups with other people with disabilities. Often, people need support to experience what is available and accessible within their community. They also need to be given opportunities to try different places and experiences in order to use services, pursue interests and meet people that will assist them to be a valued and included member of their community.
How you can help
You can support someone with a disability by offering them the same services and opportunities you give to other people. Some people with a disability may need extra encouragement or support to participate in activities; this is where our trained and experienced staff provide such an important link between community groups and our clients. People with disabilities can offer as much to your group as any other person.
Our staff are trained and experienced in supporting clients to identify interests and develop goals. We use a planning and goal setting process to ensure that. Community support is vital and our staff are trained not only to support our clients but also to encourage community participation and effective inclusion.

Circus Spectacular Sponsorship
Annually scosa hosts Circus Spectacular for clients, families and carers. Circus Spectacular is a fantastic opportunity for people who utilise our services to experience the fun of the circus - completely free of charge!
Close to 6000 guests attended the 2006 Circus Spectacular in Bonython Park and thoroughly enjoyed the experience under the Big Top with a mix of comedy and acrobatics; and even a touch of magic thrown in.
This fun and exciting event helps raise money to support the continuing work of scosa in helping people with Cerebral Palsy and other disabilities.
We are very grateful for the overwhelming support of the South Australian business community and sincerely thank all of the 2,500 sponsors of the 2006 Circus Spectacular, who helped make it possible!
If you'd like to sponsor a young person for this year's Circus Spectacular, please contact us on 8347 2664 or email us at info@scosa.com.au
